is a leading national organization located in Grand Rapids, MI devoted to achieving healthcare parity for African Americans.

We are partnering with GRAAHI on an initiative to decrease the infant and birth giver mortality in the Black community where evidence shows racism and implicit bias causes the most hardship.

Our commitment is to train birth doulas or birth assistants.

Evidence based research shows birth givers with a doula have a better birth experience, less need for medical assistance and a lower level of mortality and morbidity than those without.

We believe this to be a pro-life initiative with three particular goals:

1. Infiltrate the black community in Grand Rapids and west Michigan with life saving evidence based information around birth equity, comfort measures for labor and best practices pre- and postpartum.
2. Introduce the birth field as a viable vocation option for post high school, college students and people of all ages and stages.
3. Equip persons interested in becoming doulas to launch a get certified, practice well and build a business.

In June 2022 the first cohort of 6 completed a 4 day Doula training facilitated by Jessica English from Heart Soul Birth Pros in Kalamazoo. Jessica is a Dona International certified instructor of Doulas. These trained doulas include 2 high school students, one from Holland and one from Grand Rapids. Post training the cohort will work with GRAAHI to connect them with birth givers and the opportunity to elevate the gift of doulas in the black community for the life of birth givers and babies.
