Our Special Needs staff and volunteers make it possible for kids and adults with special needs, along with their families, to be fully engaged in the activities of the church. Below you’ll find a few ways in which you can serve in this important ministry.
1:1 Team [Special Needs]
Many of the kids involved with our Special Needs ministry benefit greatly from a level of integration with peer groups in their age-appropriate Mars Hill Kids classrooms. To do this well, for each child with Special Needs we provide a caring adult who accompanies them to their age-appropriate program on Sundays, allowing for integration while also helping care for the child’s individual needs, such as helping them complete their lessons and interact with their peers.
This is a weekly or bi-weekly role, and team members also participate in a pre-serving interview as well as 2-4 trainings per year.
Adult Classroom Team [Special Needs]
Our Special Needs ministry provides support and creates opportunities that allow adults with special needs to be full participants in the life of Mars Hill. For this classroom, class members and volunteers join others from our community in the Shed for singing and spend the rest of the Gathering in their own room, learning, sharing, and interacting together.
Volunteers on our Adult Classroom Team serve the adult participants in Mars Hill Special Needs by building relationships that include interaction during lessons, time spent together in prayer and worship, and attending to the student’s individual needs.
Volunteers serve weekly or bi-weekly as part of a team during our Gathering. Those serving in these roles must participate in 2-4 trainings per year, and a pre-serving interview is also required.
Kids Classroom Team
Volunteers on our Kids Sensory Classroom Team provide support to kids with special needs and help make it possible for their families to be fully engaged in the activities of the church. They do this by leading kids in the classroom on Sunday mornings and by developing relationships with the kids and their families on Sundays and at other special events. This team of Room Leaders and Shepherds provide consistent and dependable care, concern, and safety for all in the classroom by overseeing the flow of the morning, interacting in play, connecting with children’s families about their individual needs and then attending to those needs.
Both bi-weekly and weekly serving opportunities are available during the Gathering. A pre-serving interview is required, and volunteers also participate in 2-4 trainings and/or meetings during the year.
Looking for a flexible way to serve? Our Special Needs ministry is looking for an organized volunteer to help develop their bi-monthly volunteer schedules. In this role, the SN Volunteer Scheduler would contact each of our SN volunteers every other month to access their availability over the upcoming two months and create a schedule for Children’s Sensory Room and Adult Special Needs Room.
If spontaneity is your thing—sign up to serve as an On-Call Volunteer in our Children’s Sensory Room. We’re currently looking for 2-3 people who could rotate being on call on Sunday mornings so that we can ensure a great standard of care no matter what sickness or scheduling conflicts come up.
