We invite you to join us this summer as we begin a new series called “We Believe.” This will be a three-month exploration through the Apostles’ Creed, primarily asking the questions, “What does it mean?” and “Why does it matter?”.
One of our church’s directional values is Backward. This reminds us to honor and respect our roots. We want to be a people marked by humility, recognizing what we have inherited from previous generations of faithful yet stumbling-along followers of Jesus. Part of that inheritance is the Apostles’ Creed. This is a statement that helps to succinctly summarize the essentials of our Christian faith.
Now, we fully admit that Christianity will always be more nuanced than any attempt to define it, and it will always be greater than our understanding and attempts to study it. But what the Apostles’ Creed does so well, in just over one hundred words in total, is highlight that Christianity cannot be less than these words. And these words help us not simply explain aspects of our faith, but these are words that also invite us to engage and live into our faith more deeply.
Each week we will focus on one phrase from the Creed, making our way through its entirety over the course of three months. We will also begin updating our community on our membership process during this series. We will explore how the Apostles’ Creed historically functioned to include new members of the early church. At the same time, we will be asking what it means to belong to Mars Hill and how someone can enter that process. We will conclude the series, after a slow three-month crescendo, with baptisms on the final Sunday.
